A short history of Museum of Natural History
It’s the greatest museum of natural history in Italy and it is one of the most important museum of Europe. Since 1838, foundation year, the Museum of Natural History is always renewed acquiring new collections and developing didactic tours of considerable scientific value.
In 1943 it was seriously damaged by bombardments and a lot of collections they suffered remarkable damages. Thanks to the enthusiasm of many fans, at the end of the 2nd WW, the Museum was reconstructed and in 1952 it again came open to the public.

The 23 Museum’s rooms develop it on over 5000 square meters of space with over 700 showcases, where the themes of relationships between organisms and habitat, of the evolution life history and the wealth, of natural forms are developed with extreme heed. A lot of exemplary plants and animals, mineral and fossils, selected among over 2.500.000 preserved in the rich collections of the museum, will speak to you about incredible forms of the nature, of the life and of the man natural, of the relationships between the organisms and their habitat. For one day you will be in the first row spectators of the wonderful show of the nature: the museum is the only one in Italy where, in almost 100 dioramas of exceptional beauty and naturalistic accuracy, you can admire the amazing biodiversity of our planet.

The Museum of Natural History has a rich specialized Library too, open to your consultation. Many works are a related to all the natural science fields: from geology to astronomy, from botany to zoology, from paleontology to anthropology. With over 120.000 volumes and smaller publications, about 4.000 magazines, it is of the more important naturalistic libraries of Italy.
