History of St.Eustorgio's Basilica
chiese/eustorgio1.jpgInitially it was a small basilica founded in the IV century upon archbishop Eustorgio's grave and it was center, up to the plunder of Frederick the Barbarossa, of Kings Magi's grave.
Between the V and the VI century was incorporated in a greater building of which nothing has remained.
Destroyed by Fredrerick the Barbarossa, after the conquest of the city, was reconstructed around 1190.
From the XIII century the church became the principal center of the Dominican order to Milan.
In Four hundred the basilica became wealthy of valuable Renaissance addendums, the façade was referred and the famous Portinari chapel was realized and adorned by frescos of Vincent Foppa and (from the XVIII century) center of the marmoreal sepulchre of St. Peter Martyr, fourteenth-century Giovanni's of Balduccio work, Giovanni's Pisano student.
The recent restaurations (1999) give reason about the native splendour. To the beauty of the frescos with histories of St. Peter Martyr, the presence of an extraordinary monumentality and modernity of the architecture.
The Dominican cloisters of fifteenth-century are the center of Diocesan Museum.
