Saint Babila Church

History of Saint Babila Church and his interior
The basilica of S.Babila is the first Christian church in Milan and was considered once the most important in Milan after the Cathedral and the Basilica of Sant'Ambrogio.
The church was built around the year 46.
Reconstructed after 1575 with the prolongation of a span, while from 1598 to 1610 the façade, subsequently destroyed, and the Romanesque apses were completed.
In 1880 the church was restored by the architect Cesa Bianchi, that realized the recovery of the native Romanesque structure with integrations in style. The jobs of the façade were performed by Caesar Nava and finished in 1905,
The bell tower, built in 1820 in substitution of that collapsed in the XVI century, in 1926 was transformed into forms neoromaniche
The cupola is octagonal on rectangular base.
The inside is to three aisles each concluded from an semicircular apse: that one central is covered to barrel while the side ones are to cruise ribs. In the right aisle there is a seventeenth-century image of the Madonna that is among the more loved by the Milaneses.
The two side chapels go back to the Late Renaissance.
Of the original church nothing doesn't remain for the heavy restorations and imitations to which all the medieval churches of the city were submitted in the last two centuries.
